UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN STUDENTS FOUND ORGANIZATION TO HELP EMOTIONAL OR SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT AT RISK CHILDREN AND ELDERLY

Press Release
6/14/07

ANN ARBOR—West Bloomfield High School graduates and University of Michigan Juniors Brett and Dan Ehrmann, along with Detroit Country Day graduate and University of Michigan Junior Ankush Bansal, have co-founded a University of Michigan-registered student organization called Weekly Correspondence Assisting Recovery, or WeCARe.

The organization aims to link University of Michigan students with Ann Arbor residents who are in at-risk emotional and/or social environments, including foster children and the elderly in hospice care. Each student is first paired with one of these individuals, and then corresponds with them on a weekly or bi-weekly basis via letters and personal visits.

In addition, WeCARe and the University of Michigan occasionally sponsor social events for the University of Michigan students and Ann Arbor residents who are physically able to participate. Venues for these events include laser tag, arcades, and go-carting.

This spring marked the culmination of WeCARe’s pilot program, which involved several University of Michigan students corresponding with Ann Arbor foster children. WeCARe plans to expand to include at least fifty more at-risk Ann Arbor residents in need of a University of Michigan student correspondent in the fall.
